The Sanskrit word “Pada” means “foot” and “Angushtha” means “toes”. In this asana, the weight of the whole body is balanced on the toes. Therefore, this asana is called Padangushthasana.
Technique:
Sit comfortably on a blanket or carpet supporting yourself on your heels. Now fix the left heel on the pereneum and balance the weight on toes and palms. Now bend the right leg at the knee, and put the right leg on the left knee. If you wish you can lean against a wall for balance. Having maintained balance, keep your hands on your waist. This is the final position of this asana. Breathe normally and keep the spine and neck straight. Hold on comfortably as long as possible and then return slowly. Relax comfortably. Repeat the asana with the other leg.
Contra-indications:
Ladies need not do Padangushthasana. Married males should also not practise this asana too often.
Benefits:
The distance between the anus and the testicles is about two inches. This region is called the pereneum. If the pressure is applied on this part, the flow of the semen is obstructed to a certain extent. So the Padangushthasana is very helpful for keeping celibacy. This is a very useful asana for celibates and students.
