The Sanskrit word “Vajra” means “thunder bolt” or “very Strong”. This asana makes the body very strong like a thunder bolt. Therefore this asana is called Vajrasan.
Technique :
Bend the legs backward and sit on the carpet or blanket with the help of your knees. Your legs should stretch towards the back and your toes should touch each other. Let the heels be apart. Let the buttocks rest on the heels or let them lie in between the heels. Let the waist, neck and the spinal column be erect. Rest both your hands on the knees and keep the elbows straight. Let the fingers touch each other and the look towards the front. Let the breathing be normal. This is the final position of this Asan. It is enough to do this asana for 5 to 10 seconds in the beginning. You can do it for half an hour gradually increasing the time. This asana can be done even after lunch for 10 to 12 minutes.
Note:
Vajrasana is the only asana which can be done after taking food. Some people can do Vajrasana sittig on their toes. This is not correct. One must not sit in this position. In the beginning while doing Vajrasana you might develop some pain in the legs due to stretching them. You need not discontinue the practice. The pain will disappear.
Caution :
There are varieties of Vajrasan. But this is the only one which can be done after taking food.
Benefits:
Vajrasana eases tiredness of the legs. People suffering from indigestion should do it for ten minutes after taking food. It helps cure elephantiasis rheumatism of the knees, back ache and sciatica.
