Probably a sage called Vatayan used to do japa or penance in this asana. Therefore, the name of this asana is Vatayanasana.
Technique:
Stand erect on a blanket or carpet. Let both your legs and knees remain together. The heels, buttocks and the back of the head should be straight. Now place the foot of the right leg, by bending it at the knee, at the base of the left thigh. Joint both hands in the posture of salutation. Now gradually bend your left knee forward, put the right knee slowly on the ground near the left heel. This is the final stage of this asana. Maintain this stage comfortably as long as possible, breathing normally. Return to the former position slowly. Do the same with the other leg.
Contra-indications:
Vatayanasana should not be practised by girls and women.

Vatayanasana helps keep celibacy. It helps cure diabetes. It prevents wet dreams and cures all disorders of the semen. It strengthens the calves, knees, waist, spine and neck.
